Most buyers judge a crusher liner, jaw plate or blow bar by its unit price. But the invoice is not the cost — the cost is what you pay per ton of material processed before the part is changed out again. That number is decided long before the PO is signed. This guide walks through the seven mistakes that quietly inflate it, and how to avoid each one on your next order.

Why "cheap" crusher parts are rarely cheap

A liner that costs 30% less but fails 40% sooner is not a saving — it is a tax on every ton you crush, plus the downtime to change it. The metric that matters is cost per ton processed, and it is driven by wear life, fit accuracy, material grade matched to your ore, and how predictable your supply is. Price is only one input. The pitfalls below are the places where that metric leaks.

1 · Buying on unit price instead of cost per ton

Why it hurts: Two quotes can look identical in dollars and be worlds apart in life. A harder, better-matched grade may cost more per kilogram but run far longer, dropping your real cost per ton.

What to do: Ask each supplier for the expected wear life in your duty, then compute $ per ton = part price ÷ tons processed. Compare that, not the sticker. A part at 1.3× the price that lasts 2× as long wins.

2 · Assuming "compatible" means "identical fit"

Why it hurts: A profile that is a few millimetres off changes the crushing chamber, hurts throughput, and can crack the part or the machine. "Fits roughly" is not "fits."

What to do: Require the cavity profile and key dimensions to be matched to the OEM drawing. Reputable suppliers reverse-engineer from the original and will share dimensional inspection records — not just a photo.

3 · Specifying the material grade without the ore

Why it hurts: The right steel depends on your feed size, crushing stage and — above all — abrasiveness (silica, SiO₂). A grade perfect for one duty can wear out fast in another. This is the single most common cause of "it didn't last like the last one."

4 · Ignoring lead time against downtime risk

Why it hurts: The most expensive part is the one that is not there when the liner fails. Rush air freight or a panic premium purchase wipes out any saving from the original quote.

What to do: Know the real schedule — stock items ~7–10 days, made-to-order 25–40 days, plus 20–35 days by sea. Plan changeouts ahead and keep high-runner parts in stock or on a standing order.

5 · Skipping proof of quality (no MTR)

Why it hurts: Without a Material Test Report you are trusting a claim, not verifying chemistry and hardness. Sub-spec material is the silent killer of wear life.

What to do: Make an MTR (chemical composition + hardness) and dimensional inspection a condition of every order. It is your QA team's only real lever before installation — and a standard, not a favour.

6 · Unclear Incoterms and hidden landed cost

Why it hurts: A low ex-works price can balloon once freight, insurance, duties and local handling are added — or, worse, arrive with a surprise bill at the border that stalls clearance.

What to do: Agree the Incoterm up front (FOB, CIF or DDU) and confirm who pays duty and last-mile. Compare true landed cost, and get the export documents (invoice, packing list, certificate of origin) with the shipment.

7 · Single-source supply risk

Why it hurts: One supplier means one point of failure — a stockout, a quality drift, or a price spike all land entirely on you, and your plant stops when they do.

Run every inquiry through this before you compare quotes:

  1. Crusher model & cavity — exact model, cavity/profile, and key dimensions supplied or confirmed.
  2. Material grade matched to ore — grade chosen from feed size, stage and SiO₂, not "whatever you have."
  3. Expected wear life stated — supplier gives life in your duty so you can compute cost per ton.
  4. MTR + dimensional QC promised — chemistry, hardness and inspection records included with the batch.
  5. Real lead time confirmed — stock vs made-to-order, plus freight, with a firm date.
  6. Incoterm & landed cost clear — who pays freight, insurance and duty, no border surprises.
  7. Backup supplier qualified — a second audited source ready if the primary stalls.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two crusher parts quotes fairly?

Compare on expected wear life and cost per ton processed, not unit price. Make sure both quotes are for the same material grade, the same cavity profile, and ship with the same quality documents (MTR, dimensional inspection). A part that lasts twice as long at 1.3× the price is the cheaper option.

What documents should a wear parts supplier provide?

At minimum: commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin. For quality you should also receive a Material Test Report (chemical composition + hardness) and dimensional inspection records, plus loading photos for the shipment. Is a cheaper Chinese aftermarket part lower quality by definition?
